Ryecross Farm Cottage in Shaftesbury

Welcome to Ryecross Farm Cottage. The historic market-town of Shaftesbury sits 750 feet above sea-level, looking down onto the Blackmore Vale.

Accommodation

All ground floor. Two bedrooms: 1 x double, 1 x twin. Shower room with shower, WC and wash basin. Small, fully fitted kitchen. Living room with dining area and patio windows with lovely views over Blackmoor Vale.

Location

Ryecross Farm Cottage is just half a mile from Shaftesbury, surrounded by idyllic farmland. Built in stone, the cottage has recently been converted to offer accommodation for up to 4 people, all on one level. There is a shared garden that offers fantastic views across the Blackmore Vale and the potential for al fresco dining during the summer months. The owner also owns a private fishing lake which you can use through prior arrangement. This cottage offers a haven in which to get away from it all but, if you are seeking night-life or a restaurant, then Shaftesbury is within easy access.

It was founded 1100 years ago by King Alfred who built a fortified settlement here ad went on to build the Abbey which draws tourists throughout the year. Gold Hill is one of the most famous locations in Shaftesbury and in one of the cottages that sits on its top, you'll find the Town Museum which holds samples of the buttons which once made Shaftesbury so famous. Lying on the border of Wiltshire, staying in Shaftesbury also puts you within easy reach of other attractions, such as Stonehenge, the Compton Abbas airfield and the beaches of Poole and Bournemouth. About 5 miles north-east of Shaftesbury are the remains of Wardour Castle, which has never been restored since it was besieged during the English Civil War. Half an hour away are the fossilised beaches of Lyme Regis and Charmouth.

Explore the fossils and stunning beaches of Dorset's Jurassic Coast, visit historic Sherborne and Shaftesbury, or enjoy the footpaths, country lanes and thatched-roof pubs Dorset offers.

Reviews of Ryecross Farm Cottage

"Our break here was great. The cottage is well placed for access to a beautiful part of the country. Many excellent places to visit and great walks to be had. We saw some fantastic sunsets over the hills and valleys just sitting in the sitting room. The only slight reservation is that exiting the property onto a busy, narrow road with high hedges was a little nerve-racking, otherwise I would have given 5 stars."

"We particularly liked the deer in the field next to the cottage and the fox going by the woods by the field. The buzzard on the nest was in view from the lounge through the French windows, and the walks nearby were nice - the place had peace and quiet at all times. "

"Cottage was very good, in a quiet location, with lovely views and easy access by car to Shaftesbury and other Dorset attractions. November weather was kind - sunny. Gold Hill, Shaftesbury (location of Hovis advert) is worth visiting with good eating places at the top and bottom of the hill! Also walked around Shear Water (towards Warminster) and had a fascinating visit to the Cafe at Compton Abbass Airfield - good value with a good view of light aircraft activity. Also went to Bath Christmas Fayre - very crowded and parking not easy."

The let was good value for money and we will have no hesitation in reccommending it to family and friends. Thanks!"

"Ryecross was a clean well;appointed and comfortable cottage with avery pleasant outlook over the Blackmoor Vale. We enjoyed our very much in the local area and beyond to the coast. It helped to have good weather, but the cottage was of such a standard that if we had to stay in all day it would have been equally enjoyable. The only minor complaint was the lack of a large frying pan. Instructions for the microwave would have been helpful."
